What is Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria (RSD)?
According to the Cleveland Clinic, RSD occurs when someone feels “intense emotional pain related to rejection.” RSD is also known as regional pain syndrome and is linked to ADHD. RSD may be caused by trauma (such as when any type of accident occurs) to the peripheral or central nervous system. The central nervous system includes your brain and spinal cord. The peripheral nervous system transmits information from your brain and spinal cord to your arms, legs, fingers, toes, and organs.
RSD may also be a response to other injuries an accident victim suffers. RSD can cause emotional dysregulation which occurs when “your brain can’t properly regulate the signals related to your emotions.”
The Cleveland Clinic states that RSD may cause a victim to:
- Feel severe anxiety or other uncomfortable emotions before an anticipated rejection
- See nonpositive interactions as only being a rejection
- Overreact to feelings of rejection that can cause extreme sadness, rage, and anger
- Have low self-esteem
Generally, RSD victims experience chronic pain in the area where they’re injured. Physical symptoms may include infections, pain with movement, stiff joints, muscle weakness, perspiration, insomnia, and emotional pain.
How are RSD and CRPS diagnosed in Cherry Hill?
RSD and CPRS are both difficult to diagnose. Many physicians and mental health professionals fail to make a proper diagnosis. There is no specific test. Your healthcare providers will look for:
- Changes in the temperature, texture, or appearance of the skin in the affected area
- More pain than is normally expected for a specific type of injury
MRIs and ultrasounds may be used to help detect nerve damage. Other tests may be ordered to rule out other causes.
Are there treatments for RSD in Cherry Hill?
Medications are often prescribed to help treat RSD. These medications, according to the Cleveland Clinic, may include:
- Alpha-2 receptor agonists
- Stimulant medications
- Monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) medications
Most Cherry Hill personal injury victims with RSD benefit from psychotherapy/mental health therapy.
