New Jersey Police Troubled By Increase In Traffic Deaths

In Motor Vehicle Accident, Trucking Accident

2011 was a not a good year for motorists on the roadways in New Jersey. For the first time in five years, the number of people killed in New Jersey fatal car accidents increased by 82 between 2010 and 2011. For police officers and state highway safety personnel this is a troubling increase.

Because of this increase, state police urge motorists to focus on safety when traveling on the state’s roadways. Even though there are external and environmental factors that are involved in accidents, there is also the human aspect of driving. Especially when factoring in those drivers who engage in things like distracted driving, speeding, aggressive driving, and consumption of alcohol which can and do cause many car and truck accidents.

The Tri-State Transportation Campaign conducts its own independent analysis regarding fatalities on the roadways. This campaign believes that better design of the roadways will improve safety not only for drivers but pedestrians as well. The campaign is focusing on areas where the most accidents occurred and focusing on the engineering of those very areas.

The Transportation Commissioner believes that roadway repair, along with education and enforcement for those drivers who are inattentive and engaging in risky driving behaviors is important to improving overall highway safety.

While there are plenty of improvements that could be made to the roadways, and the lack of funding has also become an issue, those involved in the safety arena seem to all agree and stress that when it comes to decreasing fatalities, there are many concerns that will need to be addressed.
