As we head into the new year Governor Christie signed three bills which has made expunging minor and limited criminal offenses from your record easier and more accessible.

Last week, just before the Christmas break, Governor Christie signed three bills:

  1. 3306 http://www.njleg.state.nj.us/2016/Bills/S3500/3306_R1.PDF, which limits the questions that may be asked of applicants regarding an expunged record. Takes effect immediately.
  2. 3307 http://www.njleg.state.nj.us/2016/Bills/S3500/3307_R1.PDF, which reduces the wait time required to expunge a record and expands the offenses which may be expunged from a record. Will become effective in October of 2018.
  3. 3308 http://www.njleg.state.nj.us/2016/Bills/S3500/3308_I1.PDF, which reduces the wait time required to expunge a juvenile record. Will become effective April of 2018.

This is great news for anyone in New Jersey with a criminal record that may be otherwise holding them back. What we hear from most is that in a tough job market, anyone with even minor incidents may be kept out of a job. Expungements can clear the way to better, more gainful employment and access to services that may be otherwise foreclosed with a record.
